The event started off with us juniors, seniors, and some sophomores setting up our tables for the incoming freshmen and sophomores. It seemed like it was going well for the club officers, but from what I’ve heard some club representatives say that they could’ve prepared more fliers, maybe candy and other things. Like Pride Club representative, Laurence Urmatan, Scratch Paper representatives Erich Packer and Katie Wiklund have said they could’ve significantly prepared more for the event like having laid out more informational things such as posters, etc.
From what I’ve heard by interviewing a couple of the activity fair club representatives, most have had positive interactions with the freshmen and sophomores.
Some clubs that were ‘dying down’ gained more members. For example, French Club representative, Audrina Biba, certainly was excited to see many new faces in the French Club, speaking of which apparently they also had a club meeting that day in which many new members attended. Additionally, Audrina said that she had the opportunity to talk to a native French speaker, which was a positive experience for the club, and has also said that there were some open positions for Freshmen and Sophomores to be officers.
We, the Pride Club representatives, certainly gained a lot of traction, however, there are two sides of the story. Pride Club representatives, Laurence Urmatan, Demi Ghert, Alex Claxton, and Moon Gonzalez certainly had a spectrum of experiences. Moon wasn’t around long enough to experience anything unfortunate to happen; Demi’s experience in their own words was fun, and they were happy to try something new even though some of their interactions with fellow sophomores and freshmen were unfortunate, most were positive. Laurence and Alex as Junior and Senior stayed there the whole duration of the event, it was certainly nerve-racking for both as they had to constantly talk to the crowd of incoming Freshmen and Sophomores. I personally severely underestimated how many fliers we’d be giving out, as I only printed out a hundred copies forgetting that there are thousands of students in this campus. Nearing the end of the day Alex helped out tremendously by cutting out fliers that Mrs. Sarah Stepek had previously printed out for us. I would say that it was fun, but it was hectic, and I feel that others would also agree.
All in all, I think many of the clubs benefited from this event. It was a great opportunity to meet the new Freshmen and see familiar faces from the Sophomores.
