The Warren Blue Devils kicked off their season with a win in the first game of the season at home. This was no easy task as Hersey’s quarterback is a three-star commit to UCLA, but the Blue Devils forced three interceptions to help get the victory. On the way, running back Aaron Stewart finished the game with 362 rushing yards and five touchdowns to break the school’s rushing yard record in a game. Warren Blue Devils 55, Hersey Bears 26.
On the opening kickoff, Hersey forced a fumble and scored within minutes to put them up 7-0 to start the game. Both teams then traded touchdowns going into the second quarter to make the score 20-20. Warren halted Hersey’s momentum as the Huskies missed a field goal and Warren capitalized with a 32-yard touchdown run by Aaron Stewart for his third of the game to give the Blue Devils their first lead. The Blue Devils got another stop and Aaron Stewart struck again with a 55-yard touchdown run to make the score 34-20. With another Aaron Stewart touchdown, the Devils had a 41-20 The third quarter showed both teams trading possessions on offense, including two interceptions by Senior Julian Vietz. Neither team scored in the third quarter but the drought ended in the fourth when Aydan Edwards caught a 22-yard pass from Jack Wolf. Late into the fourth quarter, XZavion Montgomery made an impressive 55-yard catch run for the Devil’s 8th and final touchdown.
Jack Wolf finished with 179 passing yards on 10/12 completions and two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Aydan Edwards caught five passes for 92 yards and an impressive touchdown grab. On defense, Senior Julian Vieux had two interceptions and Junior Zion Vanes-Peterson picked off Hersey’s quarterback.
Aaron Stewart broke school records on Friday night totaling 362 yards on the ground and 5 touchdowns. He also earned the honor of being named the Chicago Bears and Athletic ISHA Player of the Week, a prestigious honor. However, after the game, Aaron said, “All the games are the same to me. You can’t let the pressure get to you.”
The Blue Devils look to continue their success in their next matchup against Maine South on Friday, September 6th.
