A character, Marcus, sends a photo of himself over text. He’s making eye contact with the camera while lying on his bed. Under it is a grey text bubble. It reads, “I’m doing it, are you?” I won’t explain the context; you’ll have to watch for yourself. This scene appears in the Netflix series Ginny & Georgia. Its first season was released in February of 2021 and had 52 million viewers within the first 28 days. Its second season debuted at number one on Netflix’s Top 10 TV chart. In short, it’s popular. With confirmation of season three, I’ve decided to revisit the series. I’m watching it, are you?
Ginny & Georgia focuses on the mother-daughter duo, Virginia “Ginny” Miller (Antonia Gentry), the daughter, and Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey), the mother. Season one has 10 episodes, each averaging a 54-minute runtime. In the first episode, Ginny finds herself in a love triangle, and Georgia is revealed to have poisoned and killed her husband. That’s only scratching the surface. There are many subplots following side characters like Austin, the youngest of the family, who is bullied at school. Then there are Ginny’s new friends, Maxine, Abby, and Norah, nicknamed M.A.N.G. Abby struggles with an eating disorder, Maxine is trying to get the attention of her crush, and Norah’s just kind of there. Georgia is secretly writing letters to Austin, pretending to be his Dad who is in prison. Oh and there’s flashbacks to Georgia’s abusive childhood. These are all examples of my main critique. There is too much going on. It seems like the writers are scrambling to tie up all these extra subplots leaving the main story feeling bland and rushed. It would’ve done better if they simply slowed down. I know it’s already a 10 hour long show, but again, there’s a lot going on.
On the other hand, my favorite part of the show is Georgia’s character. She’s likable yet complicated. In episode 10, Ginny says this in a fight with her mom, “I sneak around. I’m a liar. Who do you think I learned it from?” Over and over again Georgia keeps the truth from people. Usually she says it’s to protect her children but I think it’s to protect herself. That isn’t to say I’m labeling her as a bad person. I think it makes her flawed and three dimensional. She brings life to the show at its low points. When I say low points, I’m referring to scenes like in episode eight. Ginny and her boyfriend Hunter get into a fight, during which, Hunter says this, “Sorry I’m not Chinese enough for you, but I’ve never seen you pound back jerk chicken. Last time I checked, Brodie twerks better than you, and I liked your poem, but your bars could use a little more work, homie.” On IMDB, 21 writers are credited. 21 writers and all of them let that leave Hunter’s mouth, transmitting sound waves through the screen and into my ears. Season one was pretty bad, but I also watched the entire thing so that’s got to mean something.
So Season two rolls around, and everyone’s thinking that it can’t be any worse than season one. Honestly, the season was actually really good. In season one, Ginny was genuinely insufferable. I know she had problems and all, but like shut up. However, in season two, those moments were kept to a minimum, and I felt Ginny’s pain. She was more three dimensional, which I enjoyed. We also got more of Marcus (Felix Mallard) which is always good, as Marcus is the brooding, drug using type; he’s very different from Hunter. Abby was also a highlight. At the end of season one, Max and Norah dropped Abby and Ginny because Ginny and Marcus were secretly having relations, and Marcus and Max are twins. Abby knew about it and was just a boss this season. However, the highlight was Georgia. She was always doing the absolute most and I loved her for it. She killed someone, but it was justified in my opinion. Cynthia, Georgia’s frenemy, had a sick husband, like terminally ill. For context, Georgia’s fiancé Paul was running for re-election for mayor and Cynthia was running against Paul. Cynthia lost. Georgia and Cynthia had a complex relationship as Austin’s dad who was in prison for fraud and embezzlement came back. He was actually framed by Georgia, but he was also abusive towards her. Georgia got pregnant with Austin and needed to leave. Gil tried to threaten Georgia and Cynthia helped her. So, what does Georgia do as a favor? Kill Cynthia’s terminally ill husband. As if that couldn’t get any crazier, Austin saw it happen! Then, the season finale happened. Georgia and Paul got married, and it seems like everything is happy. But guess what. Georgia gets arrested for the murder of Cynthia’s husband while she’s in her own wedding dress. Who could’ve reported her? There’s also a private investigator trying to take down Georgia. A lot happens in this show. Here are some my predictions for season three:
- Georgia won’t stay in jail for long
- Georgia is crafty. She cares about her reputation and will find a way to get out, probably by around episode 4 or 5. My guess on how she does it? She either manipulates Paul into using his political status, lies in the trial, or just escapes. Plus, she’s too iconic to be kept in jail.
- Paul and Georgia will break up
- Paul just found out his wife is a murderer. He’s been manipulated for two seasons, and he wants to be president. He’s either going to try to completely fix Georgia, which won’t work (Georgia’s too headstrong), or break up. They’re not lasting.
- Ginny and Marcus will get back together
- At the end of season two, Marcus breaks up with Ginny because he feels Ginny’s too good for him. My guess? They get back together. It won’t be easy. I expect a lot of turbulence, Marcus dating other people, Ginny dating other people, messy fights between them, but ultimately, they get back together. It’s always been them.
