Over the past two weeks, the Warren Girl’s Basketball team started off their season in a Thanksgiving tournament hosted by New Trier High School. The girls started their season on November 14th in a fast-paced game against New Trier. The team fought hard against a tough team. Nari Powers, Mariah Phelps, and Jamila Bland led the team in points. Unfortunatly, New Trier pulled ahead of the Blue Devils and won the game in a final score of 54-27.
Two days later, the Blue Devils played Loyola Academy in the first home game of the season. After losing to the team last year, the girls were excited to play Loyola again on their home court. Once again, Nari Powers and Mariah Phelps led the team in scoring. Shay Love along with Nari also made an huge impact for the team in defensive rebounds. Despite the high-intensity game, Loyola maintained their lead throughout the game, leading to a final score of 58-37.
The following Saturday, November 18th, Warren came out strong in a game against Phillips Academy in the third tournament game at Loyola. The team worked together on defense, forcing Phillips to turn the ball over several times. Nari Powers and Yazmin Lenzi led the team in rebounds, while Mariah Phelps had four steals during the game. The Blue Devils worked hard the entire game and were able to beat Phillips in a final score of 66-49.
The day before Thanksgiving, while many students were hitting the snooze button or shutting off their alarms entire, the Blue Devils were up early to play the final game in the tournament against Fenwick High School at New Trier. The game was hard fought and the girls never slowed the game. Once again, sophomore Jamila Bland led the team in some incredible rebounds. Nari Powers and Shay Love had seven collective steals, resulting in some easy layups and hustle plays made by them and the rest of the team. The team fought hard to win the game with a final score of 53-46.
The team has a loaded season ahead of them with 24 more games to go. Even though the girls had a rocky start to the season, they were able to finish the Thanksgiving Tournament going 2-2. With five seniorsĀ and two returning varsity players on the team, they have a promising season ahead of them. Coach Stancyzkiewicz (Stan) and Coach Swanson are excited to see what the season holds for the team!
