Have you or someone else you know parked in a handicap spot before? Or maybe you’ve parked on the lines next to handicap spots. Regardless, here are some things you should know about handicapped parking.
Firstly, the crossed-out yellow lines next to handicapped spots are not parking. They exist so that wheelchair users or someone with a ramp attached to their car is able to easily get in and out of their vehicle.
This problem of people who (illegally) park in handicapped parking spaces isn’t just an issue at Warren — it’s universal. As a wheelchair user, and someone who needs handicapped parking because of their disability, it is always frustrating when someone who is able-bodied or doesn’t need a handicapped spot parks in one without a handicapped placard.
So, what can you do to help solve this issue? You can start by educating your friends and family on handicapped spaces and the yellow lines next to them. You can also report anyone who is violating this rule by reporting them to the non-emergency number for the police. Parking in handicapped spaces is considered illegal. Please consider this PSA the next time you or someone else wants or tries to park in handicapped spots.
