Head Coach’s insight on this year’s wrestling season
November 14, 2016
“I would like to win conference, I don’t think we have done that ,in the history of Warren, that’s our goal this year.” Coach Jobst, the head Coach of Wrestling, replied when asked the question: What do you expect for this season? Coach Jobst has been coaching wrestling for about 7 years for high school students, additionally he coaches for the Lake County Wrestling Club, a local youth program and a summer program. Coach Jobst has been involved in wrestling since he was 5 years old. Coaching runs in the family: His dad is also a wrestling coach!
“One of the biggest reasons why I want to be a wrestling coach is to help use wrestling as a vehicle to support other high school students get into college and to get an education. They can do either do that or wrestling can help them get a scholarship for college. I feel like I’m doing my part that’s why I coach wrestling”, stated Coach Jobst.
Being the head coach at Warren has obstacles to get over, for example managing both the O’Plaine campus and the Almond campus. According to Coach Jobst, the hardest part is coordinating wrestlers from both campuses. Of course that requires communication with the other coaches ‘if one kid wrestles really well, then they’ll move them from O’Plaine to Almond’
For instance, if a wrestler has a really good skill level, then he is moved from O’Plaine to Almond. So far this season, there are around 70 wrestlers trying out. The team consists of 30 freshmen and 40 sophomores, juniors and seniors. That should be enough players to win conference this year, which is going to be a tough goal to conquer with rival schools like Libertyville, Stevenson and Zion threatening to take the title. However, Coach Jobst is pretty confident because has 11 out of 14 starters are returning from the team last year, which adds a lot of experience and confidence onto the 2016/2017 season.
I wish the best of luck to Coach Jobst, all of the WTHS Coaches and Wrestlers on this upcoming season!!
