“For Myself ” is a charcoal drawing by Kim depicting the freedom of the constraints of societal expectations upon someone constrained to them. Kim states the inspiration for making it was a song by Syudou called “Bitter Choco Decoration” that revolves around being “a people pleaser” and having to be “absolutely perfect.” According to Kim, “the music video depicts a person in a prisoner jumpsuit being forced to eat as a metaphor for being forced to do things they don’t want to.” It ends on a low note, inspiring Kim to give it a happy ending where the prisoner puked into a toilet, representing freedom from societal constraints.
The artist’s explanation of what the piece means helps to better understand the intentions of it. Kim gave a detailed description of what it means to her. “The work shows a puppet that was once controlled by a marionette controller, breaks free from its strings and throws away the plate and utensils into an endless void after it was forced to eat. It’s shown falling off the edge intended to depict how this will be a permanent decision, and how oneself will not let themselves be controlled by anything or anyone anymore. The glass shards around the edges is meant to feel like you’re witnessing an old and painful memory, like looking into a picture frame, as this was something I struggled with, but it’s in the past now and I feel a sense of relief, despite how harsh and bitter it looks.”
The way Kim created the realistic charcoal drawing is with violent strokes on the paper in order to create a scratchy texture/ Kim believes the texture adds on to the impact of the piece. Because the piece is specifically made in black and white, it presents itself as “bitter and sad” to the audience to show the true nature of being a people-pleaser.
