While some students (like me) enjoy choosing their curriculum for the upcoming year and taking advantage of all the opportunities, others view course selection as a nightmare that serves as a constant reminder that they must complete another year of school. The district is choosing courses this year, though, in a different manner. Previous years have seen the incoming freshman class select their courses in mid- to late October, with the remaining student body selecting their courses in early November. This year, students have been left in the dark thus far. The class of 2028 have just selected their courses earlier this December, while everyone else has no idea what is going on with the district website giving two different answers. A portion of the website states we will be picking courses in early November, while another portion mentions information about selections will be posted in December.
I am quite sure some people haven’t even noticed this difference from past years, especially with the stress of finals, standardized testing, and college applications. This has slipped some minds, but some of us have frantically been checking to see any updates. I know I enjoy knowing what’s going to happen ahead of time so I can plan other details around that, such as if I know I’m going to be taking a couple of rigorous tests, to plan how I am going to make time for studying and my extra-curriculars. I also enjoy having extra time to meet with my guidance counselor to discuss what may or may not work for the following year. Another Warren student, Kai Dennis, has provided another perspective though; “I dont mind that we are choosing classes later because that way Ill know whether i like the electives i chose for second semester…” stated Kai, bringing up an interesting point on having a better understanding on your interests. He also added “I can use my experience instead of guessing for what workloads ill be to choose whether I’ll take a certain honors or AP class next year.”, I agree with Kai because in my experience after a semester of a class I have decided where I should request to be go up or down a level in that course for the following year based on the end of first semester.
Despite confusion among students, and whether some would like to select their courses or not, I have complete confidence in our district in their decision to postpone course selections. Students wish that we had an idea of when these decisions are taking place and that the website was clear on its information. We know we’ll get information soon, and (some of us) are ready to make our selections!
