Meme of the Month – September
September 26, 2016
This month’s meme is “triggered.” Originating from a word used to define anything that could remind someone with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) of a traumatic episode, this meme got its start from “trigger warnings,” which warn those with sensitivities toward a subject that this touchy area will be imminently discussed. Such trigger warnings in theory are to spare traumatized people from further discomfort, yet in practice they are used facetiously. When these warnings grew in number, people deemed though so ridiculous that they started to use them ironically, claiming that they were “triggered” by random, benign topics. This meme has spread across social media and has made its mark in meme history by poking fun at hypersensitivities in society.
Keep this in mind: if someone says that he or she is triggered by something, there’s a chance it’s a joke.
