Mr. Mauer will retire this year to enjoy his time with family, traveling, and relaxation. He has worked here for 33 years, starting as a math teacher, then moving to the math and business department, he worked his way up to administration. He started his education at UW as a finance major before switching to a teaching degree for math, eventually getting his master’s in administration.
Mr. Mauer has worked so hard in his years here doing a little bit of everything, earning him the title of a renaissance man. He helped to build additions to the school like the weight room and the cafeteria expansion, created the schedules for students, and at one point organized the assemblies, including his favorite one, which has the blue devil riding in on the back of a chopper. Certainly sounds interesting.
Mr. Maurer also did some incredible work to help the school celebrate our 100th anniversary, he went through all the old yearbooks to find photos to be used, really carrying the workload of this celebration. He is also just so skilled in knowing the history of this school. With so many years at this school, he’s witnessed some changes, like the increased number of security, when he first started he remembered that the deans used to have to act as security guards, and people could enter the building without any stops. Another major change he’s seen is having AC now. He used to be known for walking around with a thermometer, we even used to have days when school was off due to the building being too hot. Though not all has changed, he brought up the PE ramp and how it’s always caused a little trouble around dismissals.
He has touched all that he has worked with being truly an incredible person. Mrs. Bertola, when interviewed, really expressed true fondness for him. She talked about how much of a hardworking person he is, and how he does so much work that it would be hard to keep up with. She also said how supportive he has always been and helped her to become the leader that she is. Mr. Maurer has done so much to help this building run in dealing with parents, setting up student service offices, and much more on top of being great at his job. He has truly earned this time to relax and spend time with his family. In his years he has said that one thing he learned is how important forward thinking is, how the school will always be improving for the students as well as all affected.
One last thing he wanted to leave the school with is to enjoy your time here, it goes fast. He still remembers his friends from cross country. So take his lead, work hard, lead, and make friends.
Enjoy finally graduating high school, Mr. Maurer.
