Choosing my senior year schedule was not only stressful, but also really exciting. As a junior in high school, I’m excited to explore the new opportunities that Warren is offering. For example, graphic design and human anatomy & physiology will be offered at almond campus! My mom has been asking me since 8th grade if I can take a human anatomy class because it would be an amazing introduction into healthcare!
New classes are not the only thing that will be different for the 2024-2025 school year. During course selection this January, counselors have made it clear that too many people were changing their gym classes during the school year and it was something that had to change. I’ll admit that I’m guilty! I changed my gym class TWICE this year. So many of my friends admit they changed their gym class in some way, whether it was to change periods or to change the P.E. class. This year, I changed my gym class 3 days into the school year. A couple months later, I switched it out for a P.E. exemption. Our classes are scheduled the way they are scheduled to ensure that there are enough people in each class and period. However, when we all collectively switch our gym classes, we create an imbalance between classes. One gym class could have 30 people, while another class could have 15. That’s a pretty big difference!
Throughout February, WTHS students have the opportunity to select their courses. From March-May, students can request to add or drop classes. That is until the end of the school year. On the D121 official website, it says, “course requests will not be honored after the end of the spring term, as staffing and sectioning has been determined and the schedule completed.”
To begin with, there are definitely a couple of things that frighten me. I’m someone who makes her final changes at the beginning of the school year. This year, I made a total of 3 changes with my counselor. Last year, I made 4! Plus, if I don’t particularly like one of my electives towards the beginning of the year, I won’t be able to change it. However, if we really won’t be able to make any changes next year, I can see this as a good thing. My selections would be finalized. If I find a class hard, I’ll learn how to stick with things instead of dropping them. I dropped an honors class for its regular counterpart this year, when instead I could have challenged myself and used resources that were offered to me for help.
All in all, I believe that this would be something beneficial for students. It poses a challenge. But, I suggest you look over your chosen schedule again and have your schedule finalized by May. For the class of 2025, don’t forget to make the most of your last year in high school and have no regrets! Good luck on choosing your courses for next year!
