Cross country, basketball team manager and track & field. How are they related? Just ask Madi Tyler, who is currently a Senior here at Warren. Aside from being an amazing athlete out on the field, she also excels in the classroom. Madi Tyler’s athletic career started when she first joined cross country her freshman year. Moving from one season to the next she had her goals set on preparing for basketball. After the winter season, she transitioned again this time getting ready for track and field. Ever since that first year she did one thing that very few Warren athletes achieve., getting on the three-sport athlete wall.
After two years of doing three sports during the school year, she decided to step away from playing basketball but instead to manage the boys’ basketball team. Even still, balancing the time between the activities and the homework can get a little chaotic. Luckily for Madi that’s no big task. “Balancing everything can be hard at times, but I try to keep good time management by finishing my homework in class… that way when I get home I can shower, eat and go to sleep” One of the reasons she transitioned to being a manager rather than a player is so she can be closer to the game she loves a little bit of the time rather than taking focus off of cross country and track to do basketball. One of her challenges is while managing the boy’s basketball team she still has to find time to train and prepare herself for the spring track season, “Managing the basketball team while getting ready for the track season can be hard for many reasons. Basketball takes up a lot of time including after school, during the weekends and days off from school… But I was able to stay prepared for track”
With this in mind, Madi is a stellar athlete during the track season. I talked with Track and Field Head Coach Malowksi on his thoughts on Madi developing as an athlete. “Each year Madi has gotten stronger, her dedication and with her running cross country in the fall, her times have decreased…she definitely has more endurance compared to when she first started” Coach Malkowksi is excited to see more improvements Madi has made for her upcoming senior season.
Since the fall is cross country season, I talked with some of Madi’s teammates to see what they had to share on Madi’s running. “Madi is always there to lift myself and our other teammates up… I’m so glad to have such a genuine person as a teammate,” said Junior Grace Wiser. She also goes on to mention that Madi is hardworking and always is dedicated to her training.
With the basketball season coming up in a matter of a few months, speaking to members of the basketball team only seemed right. “Madi is a hard worker who is always willing to help out the program, coaches and players. We are lucky to have her as a manager” said basketball head Coach Zach Ryan. He mentions that Madi is responsible for multiple things during the season and that she is a big part of the team.
When Madi is not doing homework or playing her sports, she is a staff writer for Scratch Paper. She also helps edit the announcement videos that are shown during the week. She has made a huge impact on Scratch Paper by stepping up and helping on editing the videos even with all of her other stuff that she has going on. Madi will continue managing the basketball team this season, running track in the spring and helping out with Scratch Paper.
