Warren Mentorship Program at Woodland Elementary

Jaden Cohn, Staff Writer

While most of you are enjoying sleeping in on your late starts, these students have been out mentoring the students at Woodland Elementary. Over the past few months, a group of about 15 Warren Students have taken time out of their late starts to provide the elementary students with positive attitudes, helping hands, and cheerful games.

The program has been going on for an outstanding 5 years, and this was the first year back coming back in person. Mrs. Sauve, a paraprofessional at the school, has been in charge of the program over the last few years. Her main goal in the program is to create an encouraging environment for the students to connect with their mentors.

“One great thing about this program is just seeing the positive impact it has on our students each week. The students are always so happy on days that they get to see their mentors. It is as if they have a special friend that just belongs to them”, Sauve stated. The program has been beneficial to not only the students, but to the mentors as well.

Senior, Hailey Ostrolencki, said, “I really have enjoyed spending time with them each week, and it puts a smile on my face everytime I see them. This has really been a pleasant experience and I’m happy I made the decision to join.” With the addition of FBLA and NHS members, the program has really made an expansion, and made a good impression on the students.

A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Sauve, and the Woodland Staff for organizing the program, and making such a pleasant experience for all. The students have really shown growth between the beginning and end of the year. At the end of the year, the Woodland PTA committee was able to host a congressional breakfast for the mentors on their contribution to the program. Overall, the mentors have really worked hard to provide great leadership skills to these groups of students, and are able to shape the schooling program to be a better place.
