Still in a spooky mood after Halloween? Want to get one more scare in before the holiday season? Well, you should come down to see Warren Theatre’s production of “The Bad Seed”. This show is not your ordinary children’s play. Strap yourselves in for an evening of mystery and horror. Learn the legendary tale of “The Bad Seed” featuring Colonel and Mrs. Penmark, and their sweet little daughter Rhoda. But Rhoda has a dark secret, is she really so sweet after all?

The phenomenal cast and crew of this show have worked extremely hard to put it together. With only 4 weeks of production, there was a lot accomplished that these outstanding individuals should be proud of especially coming off a quick flip from “Julius Caesar”, auditions for Dinner Theatre were held just 3 days after the final performance of Julius Caesar. Talk about a quick change! Nonetheless, the cast and crew were able to get right into action after auditions were held.

Ms. Zimmerman, the director of this show was able to provide some intel about why she decided to pick this show. “I usually switch off between a comedy and a drama. Last year, we did “The Holiday Christmas Movie Wonderthon”, a comedy, and it was time for a drama. I chose “The Bad Seed” because it was on the darker side, and it will allow the audience to still talk about the mystery behind the show” Zimmerman concluded. “I also wanted to highlight the importance of nature vs nurture, and how the environment a child is raised in can affect their behavior.”

One key factor about this show is that it is going to be adjudicated. What does this mean, adjudicated? It means that there is going to be a representative from the IHSA which will be judging the show to see if it qualifies for state. The different shows that will be selected will have the opportunity to present the show at state. “It definitely adds a bit more stress and pressure on us, but I have faith that we will pull through”, Zimmerman expressed. This additional pressure will definitely put up the cast for a test, but they are ready for the challenge.

Kai Panagiotopoulos, who plays Rhoda Penmark, and Sophia Pas, who plays Christine Penmark, were able to provide their views on the show. Both of these cast members were involved in last year’s production of Dinner Theatre. “This role is definitely one of the hardest emotionally that I’ve ever had to play. I like being able to play a dark character, but it has just been a wild ride of emotions during this production” Panagiotopoulos stated.

“This character role has definitely  been a challenge to take on because Christine’s personality is the opposite of my own” Pas added. Both of these starring actors have provided some key examples of how this show has been pretty difficult to put together, but have worked effortlessly to allow it to flow. However, the show has benefited the cast by providing a challenging and fun play.

Wondering what the dinner portion of the show will be? Jimano’s will be catered, and there will be pasta, salad, and a bake sale! So come on down to enjoy a night of horror and mystery while also enjoying some delicious Italian cuisine.
