Remember back in October when I talked about the TikTok ban? Well it happened… until it didn’t.
TikTok was banned on January 18 for only 12 hours. Service would resume on January 19, but the app still isn’t available on the App Store or Google Play Store. This has led to users that still have the app to sell their phones on eBay for thousands of dollars.
The featured image is real, by the way. Some guy actually decided to sell their phone for $50,000 just because it had TikTok on it. Just keep your phones, guys; Don’t be the person that takes out a loan to buy a phone with TikTok on it.
Do you regret deleting TikTok now? Well, an alternative is RedNote (Xiaohongshu). RedNote is basically a Chinese version of Instagram. The problem with that is that the vast majority of users only speak in Chinese, so get ready to do some translating or put some Chinese subtitles because you probably won’t know what “草稿纸很酷” means. It does seem like app has been translated to English, which it wasn’t before, so that’s good for people that don’t understand.
Other apps owned by ByteDance, such as CapCut (a video editing app) and Lemon8 (an app like RedNote), are also part of the ban. CapCut had access restored on January 21, but is not available in the App Store or Google Play.
For now, if you still have TikTok, you can follow us @wthsscratchpaper. There may be a possibility for TikTok being banned again, but we’ll have to wait and see.
(Put that Chinese text from earlier into Google Translate and find out what it says… come on, you know you want to.)
