After beating Zion Benton in the regional semifinals last Tuesday, Warren looked to extend their postseason in the regional finals against Palatine. Unfortunately, the boys came up just short, losing to the Pirates by a final score of 2-1. Warren ends the season with an overall record of 12-10-2.
The game against Palatine was an exciting but tight contest. The Blue Devils’ goal came in the 10th minute from sophomore Christian Albarran, who scored off of a cross from senior Mikey Yang. In the 41st minute, Palatine managed to tie it up. The game remained even until the end of regulation time. Then, in the last 5 minutes of the 2nd half of overtime, Palatine scored a heart-breaker, officially putting an end to Warren’s season.
Of course, the boys season was not without its successes. Head coach Jason Ahonen cited how the boys had “…a four game swing in the second half of the season…” in which they were able to improve their record to a win rate of over 50%. Ahonen also put an emphasis on the boys’ work rate, saying “…these guys really came together…[and] worked their tails off. They…were fighters and…an amazing group…to work with.”
Ultimately, the seniors and the group as a whole are what will most be remembered from the season. “It’s been a joy…I’m very proud of the boys and the seniors are going to be missed,” Ahonen stated. As for next year’s season, Ahonen hopes that the boys take the time off to hone their skills and “come back…next year and make a little magic.”
