What is a Vegan Lifestyle?

Anna Meyers, Staff Writer

With so much recent change in our world, a particular lifestyle has grown rapidly. This lifestyle has grown by over 100% within the past few years. What is this lifestyle I am speaking of? Veganism.

What does it mean to follow a vegan diet?

Following a vegan diet means that you do not consume any product that comes from an animal.  This includes chicken, fish, milk, gelatin, cheese, and so on.

What does it mean to follow a vegan lifestyle?

Following a vegan lifestyle means that you will avoid consuming any animal products or animal byproducts. In addition, someone following a vegan lifestyle would avoid leather products, suede products, and any other products made from animals. Following a vegan lifestyle also includes advocating for animal rights.

Why should you consider going vegan?

After going vegan, many people experience more energy, weight loss, and healthier skin. The benefits of going vegan stretch beyond your own well being. Going vegan helps save dozens of animals and helps decrease pollution in our ecosystems. In fact, when you convert to a vegan lifestyle you help save thousands of gallons of water each year.

“I could never give up meat, what do I do?”

I am guilty of this statement, but luckily there are plenty of meat substitutes. Meat substitutes are usually made out of lentils, beans, soy, seitan or jack-fruit. There are even vegan substitutes for ice cream and cheese!

Before you brush off the idea of veganism, try to make at least one daily swap. Becoming vegan doesn’t mean you have to go cold-turkey right away! All people who are vegan had to take steps to get where they are today. With enough determination and commitment, anyone can become vegan.
