It’s been 10 years since one of the biggest legends in music dropped her last album. Rihanna released what many consider to be her magnum opus, ANTI, on January 28 2016. ANTI was sleek, it was cool, it wasn’t chasing the radio like previous Rihanna albums were.
Even though it has been 10 years, ANTI recently became the longest charting album released by a black woman in history, surpassing 500 weeks on the Billboard 200. In many ways, ANTI is similar to one of the greatest albums ever, Lemonade, in that Rihanna refuses to stick to one genre of music, whether that’s psychedelic rock, dance, r&b, rap, she mastered each genre.
“Kiss It Better”, one of my favorite songs from the album, has recently been trending on TikTok, as many people are using it to show the transition of their winter self to their summer self.
Overall, ANTI showed us that being messy, being vulnerable, and not chasing hits can be just as successful as creating a glossy pop album. Rihanna spilled her guts on this album and chose to be dirty, and that’s why this album is her best.
