We had the please of interviewing Mrs. Thompson who has spent her entire career as a Blue Devil here at WTHS! She truly bleeds BLUE AND GOLD!
- What first inspired you to become a special education teacher?
My friend in high school was a peer buddy, and the special ed students used to have lunch with us. I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with the students, which is when I became interested in pursuing a career in special education.
- How has teaching at Warren Township High School changed over the years?
I started in 1993, and we were only at the O’Plaine campus, and the entire school’s population was approximately 1400 students. Our staff was much smaller, and everyone knew each other. We now have about 950 students per class, and we have two campuses. Unfortunately, I only know a handful of teachers from O’Plaine.
- What has been the most rewarding part of working with the students here?
I have really enjoyed watching the students grow into young adults who are more independent.
- Is there a particular moment or memory that has stayed with you throughout your career?
I had a student who graduated reach out to me to let me know that he had earned his bachelor’s and thanked me for not giving up on him, even though he had pretty much given up on himself.
- What challenges have you faced as a teacher and how have you overcome them?
Some of the challenges I have faced are working with students who have different learning styles, language backgrounds, abilities, and emotional needs. To meet these needs, I have adjusted lessons for different learners, incorporated group work, and incorporated technology for learning in the classroom. I have also utilized interactive activities and project-based learning to allow for student engagement.
- What advice would you give to future teachers, especially those interested in special education?
Students learn best with adults they trust. In special education, relationship-building is very important for academic success and behavior support. It’s best to learn students’ interests, communication styles, strengths, and what triggers them.
- What are you most proud of, and what are your plans for the future?
I felt most proud of providing an environment where students felt safe and supported. I am looking forward to not setting an alarm clock and traveling.
Congratulations on a fabulous career! We wish you nothing but the best and have fun traveling!!!
