After losing the final two games of the regular season, the Chicago Bears went into the playoffs as the NFC’s number two seed and faced the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round. Going up against their hated rivals at home on a Saturday night brought thrill and excitement for the city of Chicago. It’s been 15 years since the Bears last won a playoff game, and Ben Johnson wanted to put an end to that. Bears fans have been waiting for this opportunity for so long, and they couldn’t have asked for a better game than this one.
Unfortunately, Chicago had a rough first half, going into halftime down 21-3. The only thing to really cheer about was a missed 55-yard field goal from Brandon McManus to end the half. Green Bay was also getting the ball to start the second half, so the vibes were low, and fans were not happy. Packers quarterback Jordan Love had 3 touchdown passes, and their defense only gave up a field goal on Chicago’s opening drive. They also got an interception off of Caleb Williams, who flat-out looked bad and made some horrible throws. Ben Johnson made some questionable decisions to go for it on 4th down, causing the Bears to turn the ball over several times, allowing the Packers to score those touchdowns. After all of the excitement for this game throughout the week, Bears fans were not pleased, and it seemed like the Packers were going to run away with it. Coming back down 21-3 basically seemed impossible, and the Bears needed a miracle to pull this one off.
The 3rd quarter wasn’t much better, however, as the Bears only got a field goal, and Caleb Williams threw another interception on a fourth down when the ball was at the Packers’ six-yard line. At least they didn’t give up any points. The offense did look a little bit better, though, as they were starting to find their rhythm before the interception with about 3 minutes left in the quarter. Still, Chicago would need a crazy comeback to win as they went into the 4th quarter down 21-6.
But, as always, the Bears came alive in the 4th quarter and pulled off another improbable comeback win. It started with a 51-yard field goal from Cairo Santos with 13:34 to play. After forcing a three-and-out, Chicago drove down the field and got a 6-yard touchdown run from D’Andre Swift to make it a 5-point game with about 10 minutes left. However, the Packers answered back with a 23-yard touchdown catch from Matthew Golden, his first of his rookie year. Luckily, Brandon McManus missed the extra point, allowing the Bears to only be down 27-16, meaning a touchdown along with a two-point conversion and a field goal would tie the game. Chicago got the ball with six and a half minutes to play, needing to score on this drive.
As they were trying to get down the field, the Bears were faced with a huge 4th and 8 on their own 43-yard line with 5:37 to play. If they didn’t convert it, the game was basically over. Miraculously, Caleb Williams threw the ball running to the left with both feet off the ground and found Rome Odunze for a 27-yard gain. He literally looked like the iconic Air Jordan pose, and he placed the ball perfectly in the hands of Odunze, who was finally back after being out for several games. Then, Chicago got an 8-yard touchdown catch from Olamide Zaccheaus and the two-point conversion from Colston Loveland to make it a 3-point game with 4:18 to play. Green Bay started to respond as they got the ball to the Bears’ 26-yard line. However, Brandon McManus missed another field goal, this one a 44-yarder, a huge miss that kept the Bears only down 3 points with 3 minutes left in the game. Chicago certainly took advantage of that, as they easily got down the field, and Caleb hit DJ Moore for a beautiful 25-yard lead-taking touchdown with only 1:48 left to play. That put the Bears up 31-27, meaning that missed extra point forces the Packers to score a touchdown. Green Bay got down to Chicago’s 28-yard line, but one last heave to the endzone from Jordan Love as time expired fell incomplete. The comeback kids Chicago Bears did it again.
This was the biggest win for the Bears in at least 15 years, and the city of Chicago went absolutely bonkers watching this one. Soldier Field was shaking, and players were pumped leaving the field. Caleb Williams grated cheese live on the postgame show on Prime Video as fans watched and cheered. Ben Johnson started his “Good, Better, Best” speech by saying F*** the Packers! The postgame handshake between him and Green Bay head coach Matt LaFleur was very quick, and LaFleur did not like how he acted. Caleb Williams finished with 361 passing yards and 2 passing touchdowns, receiving a game ball for his clutch 4th quarter performance once again. He then gave it to Ben Johnson, shouting out how motivational and inspiring he has been for Caleb and the whole team, and to celebrate his first playoff win with the Bears. Like Ben Johnson said postgame in the locker room, this is one the players, and the city of Chicago, will never forget.
Now, the Bears host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round tonight at 5:30 PM. A big factor in this game will be the weather, as it will be frigid with some snow possible around kickoff. Along with strong winds, it will feel much colder than it actually is, and wind chills could dip below zero. According to AccuWeather, temperatures will feel like -5 degrees, while the actual temperatures will be around 20 degrees. This will make it very difficult for both teams, but especially the Rams, as they aren’t experienced with this kind of weather. Chicago is though, and they practiced all week without heaters to be prepared for tonight. Keys for Chicago to be able to win are getting points early, with their running game doing most of the work, as passing will be difficult. The defense will have to get some takeaways, as the Rams have arguably the best offense in the NFL, led by heavy MVP candidate Matthew Stafford. It will certainly be a close and high-scoring game, and we will see if Ben Johnson can bring this team to the NFC Championship Game. Bear down!
