This past weekend, I watched Scream 7. I’m a huge fan of horror movies, I love being scared and expecting the unexpected. Scream 7 has been surrounded by a myriad of controversies, with some people boycotting due to the departure of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who played the 2 main characters in Scream 5 and 6. Scream 7 went back to focusing on Sydney Prescott and her family, specifically her daughter Tatum, named after Sydney’s best friend in the first movie, who died due to Ghostface. With the new changes, did Scream 7 live up to the hype? This article has spoilers.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the opening kill, to be honest. A couple, Scott and Madison, were staying at Stu’s house, where the final act of Scream 1 and 5 happened. Scott was super excited because he’s a huge fan of the Stab franchise, while Madison did not want to be there. Ghostface pops out instantly and kills Scott, and Madison gets chased but Ghostface ultimately wins. I wasn’t a huge fan of this scene. Ghostface burns the house down to symbolize that this is a new beginning for the franchise. Stu’s house was the most iconic place in the franchise, and burning it down tells the audience that this is a new start. However, I wish Scott and Madison had a connection to any of the main characters. They were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time, and got burned alive.
I also wasn’t a huge fan of the characters. Sydney and Gale were amazing, as always, but I felt the teenage characters weren’t amazing. Aside from Tatum, who was the main character, I felt as if I didn’t know any of them. In fact, I watched the movie on Friday, and I’m writing this article on Wednesday, and I still need to look up the names of some characters. Tatum’s friends, Hannah and Celeste, were not fleshed out enough. Hannah was killed off early, but Celeste died during Act 3. She should’ve been fleshed out more. Additionally, killing off the boyfriend, Ben, really narrowed down the suspect list. However, I really enjoyed the deaths. Lucas dying due to his own mom was such a shock and his death was brutal.
I was not the biggest fan of the Ghostface reveal. Anna Camp being the Ghostface was so obvious because you don’t get an actress of her caliber and not make her the opening kill or a Ghostface. When she wasn’t the opening kill, I immediately knew she was the Ghostface. The second Ghostface was so irrelevant, when it got revealed I had no idea who it was. It was Marco, the guy from the mental asylum. We never even learned his motive. He was the worst Ghostface in all of the 7 movies.
Overall, I did not really enjoy the movie. I liked the first 2 acts, and the deaths were really good. I’d say they were the best out of all the 7 movies, but after the reveal, the momentum halted and it went bad.
