The boys varsity basketball team is above .500 with a record of 14-12. The Devils were off to a hot start at the beginning of the season with wins against Mundelein, Lakes, Carmel, Jacobs, Lake Zurich and Zion. With 7 wins in the first weeks of the season, they outscored opponents 320-264. Currently 4th in conference behind Lake Forest, Libertyville, and Stevenson, the boys hope to get a playoff berth in this year’s state playoffs.

I got to talk with junior forward Patrick Sengco before they played Lake Forest last week, about how they can keep the season on a positive note. “Of course there have been a lot of ups and downs, but that’s what basketball is about…Stevenson is one of the teams that I know were capable of beating, and looking forward to finishing the season strong.” Sengco later went on to mention that they need to stick together when it comes to important win scenario games. “As Gavin said at the beginning of the season, our team chemistry is strong, and if we stick together we can surprise a lot of people… these losses have made us bitter and it gets frustrating when nothing goes our way, but we are looking for redemption on Wednesday.”

I also got the chance to talk with senior guard Howard Mullen on how he thinks the season is going. “I think we obviously aren’t having the season we want but we’ve done a good job sticking together… for now we are looking forward to keep working hard at practice and be ready for the playoffs.”

The team will be celebrating their seniors at Senior Night tomorrow against Stevenson, tip off is set for 7pm.

Keys to the game:

Keep the turnovers to a minimum. If they have less turnovers, they’ll have more opportunities to score and get back into the game and take the lead. Watch out for fouls. The past few games fouls have been an issue with other opponents having the chance to gain more points and get ahead. Keeping the fouls low, opponents can’t get ahead by much and they can keep the game close.

Score Prediction:

For this upcoming game I think the Patriots will play hard and go until the very end, but the real question is can they stop Gavin Cartwright and the Blue Devils? I don’t think so; my score prediction is Blue Devils, 45-43.
