Now that the fall sports are winding down for Warren, all eyes are turned towards winter sports. Warren offers a variety of winter sports, including boys and girls basketball, boys swimming and diving, wrestling, boys and girls bowling, competitive cheerleading, competitive dance team, girls gymnastics and winter guard.

Basketball is big in the Warren community, the boys and girls basketball programs will boast a total of nine teams this year. The Boys Varsity team is looking to come back off of a rough, shortened 2020-2021 season. Last year the boys were only able to play 8 games, ending with a record of 2-6. They hope to bounce back this year with a season more like what they are used to, having 25 games scheduled. The Blue Devils open up with a tournament at Mundelein on 11/23. Their first home game is on 12/04 against Grant. The Girls Varsity team ended last season at an even 7-7 record. The girls got plenty of preseason preparation this year, including open gyms and fall league games. This year they are slated to play 30 games, opening up with a game against Loyola Academy, here at Warren on 11/15.

The boys swimming and diving team returns this season, hoping to face fewer challenges than last year. Last season was tough for the boys. Sophomore Daniel Garcia says that “due to COVID, the restrictions were really strict, it limited a lot of things like socializing with other people.” He looks forward to swimming again this year as it “is a sport that makes everyone feel better mentally and physically.” The boys start their season on 12/03 at Deerfield High School and their first home meet is on 12/3o against Stevenson at the O’Plaine pool.

The Warren wrestlers are also looking forward to having a full season back this year. Many of the athletes put in preseason work this year, hitting the weight room to get themselves ready for a tough and physically demanding season. The wrestling season starts on 11/23 with a quad at Grayslake North High School. They do not compete at Warren until 12/17 with a meet against Stevenson.

The girls and boys bowling season rolls in quickly this November with the girls starting on 11/29 and the boys starting 11/09. Both teams play their home matches at Bertrands Bowling Lanes in Waukegan, the girls home opener is scheduled for 12/01 and the boys on 11/18.

Now that the football season is ending, the cheerleaders and Devilette dance team moves inside for the competitive season. The girls will be performing their routines competitively against other teams throughout the winter. The cheer season gets started on 12/12 in an invitational at Stevenson. The Devilettes kick off their season on November 20th at Deerfield High School.

The girls gymnastics team start their season on the first of December with a meet at Stevenson. Our WTHS Color Guard is also going to be performing for Winter Guard throughout the winter season.

Good luck to the athletes competing this winter and make sure to go out and support your Blue Devils!
