WTHS Boys Soccer: Senior Night Recap

Kickoff tonight 7pm AT OPLAINE STADIUM

The boys senior night last Monday against Wauconda ended in a tie, with a final score of 1-1. Warren’s goal came in the 77th minute from senior Lucas Ahonen, only 6 minutes after Wauconda took the lead. The Blue Devils’ current record is 11-9-2.

Of the team’s performance, senior Lucas Ahonen said “I think the team played well tonight…we did a better job in the second half, [and] unfortunately Wauconda found a way to score. But…we didn’t panic and we continued to play and believed our goal would come…ultimately it did and I couldn’t be prouder of the way we fought back, not just today but this season in general.” Head coach Jason Ahonen stated, “Today is just a microcosm of the year…we get down, but we’re never out of it. We just work until the final whistle.”

The night honored seniors Lucas Ahonen, Chris Crowson, Diego Torres, Jack Elkinton, Alexis Ocampo, Angel Benitez, Eli Stoner, Brady Lockwood, Michael Yang, Kelom Aluka, Gabriel Anguiano, Luis Barrios-Aguilar, Anthony Flores-Giles, Ricardo Gomez, Erich Packer, Anthony Garcia, and Jovany Sanchez. Coach Ahonen spoke to the value of those he’d gotten an opportunity to work with, saying that “Seniors mean a lot. For me personally, I’ve known a lot of them forever…so it’s been a wonderful group to work with. Our season has not gone the way I think we hoped, at times, but it’s never been because of the boy’s work rate, and that’s led by the senior class.” Lucas Ahonen added that “Playing for Warren has made these last four years the best of my life by far and I have met some of my best friends while playing on the team.”

The Blue Devils will host Zion-Benton in the playoffs tonight at 7pm at the O’Plaine Stadium. Having already played the Zee-Bees, Coach Ahonen asserted that  “… the biggest thing that we need to do is continue to be us, continue to work hard, and take advantage of whatever chances we get.”
